Chapter 3
Overview
After escaping the quarry, Bree and Alice are picked up by Deputy Norris, whose racism and authority make the ride back to campus frightening in its own right. That fear shifts when Norris encounters Selwyn and Tor and immediately defers to them, revealing that the Legendborn operate above or alongside ordinary law enforcement.
The chapter leaves Bree isolated from Alice and increasingly certain that magic is real, dangerous, and embedded in the world around her. Her initial hope that the Legendborn might be protectors is complicated by Selwyn's cruelty and power.
Summary
Bree bursts out of the woods after fleeing the quarry and finds flashing police lights in the parking lot. Charlotte is explaining to a Durham County deputy, while Alice stands withdrawn and refuses Bree's attempt to check on her. Deputy Norris lets Charlotte leave with a warning but orders Bree and Alice into his squad car for the ride back to campus.
During the tense drive, Bree is acutely aware of the danger and fear that come with being a Black teenager in a police car. Alice remains angry and silent, and Norris shuts down Bree's attempt to explain what happened at the quarry. Norris then questions how the girls got into Carolina, implying racist assumptions about Bree's admission before dismissing her answer that she earned a merit scholarship.
On the dark road, Norris stops for two figures emerging from the trees: Selwyn Kane and Tor, whom Norris addresses with deference and nervousness. Selwyn identifies Bree and Alice as quarry stragglers, tells Norris there is nothing more to worry about, and effectively orders the deputy to continue on his way. Bree realizes that Norris knows about the Legendborn world and that Selwyn and Tor outrank local law enforcement in practice.
Norris drops Bree and Alice at Old East, and the girls return to their dorm in silence. Alice gets into bed without speaking, leaving Bree to compare Alice's decorated side of the room with her own bare space, stripped of reminders of her dead mother. The night's events make Bree's ordinary belongings feel like relics from a world where magic was not real.
Unable to sleep, Bree turns over the words and events she witnessed: magic, Merlin, Kingsmage, Legendborn. Although part of her wants to believe the Legendborn must be good because they hunt creatures that feed on humans, memories of Selwyn's coercion, Dustin's altered state, and the isel's death leave Bree frightened and uncertain.
