Chapter 56

Overview

Bree raises Excalibur and is revealed as Arthur’s true Scion, while Nick is identified as Lancelot’s Scion. With Arthur possessing her, Bree defeats Rhaz and his demon army, but Rhaz warns that the Line of Morgaine is rising and that enemies remain hidden among them.

The victory immediately becomes a new crisis when Arthur forces the Legendborn to kneel to Bree as king. Bree rejects the hierarchy and control Arthur demands, but the chapter ends with Bree bound to Arthur, publicly acknowledged by the Order, and overwhelmed by the cost of power.

Summary

Bree raises Excalibur, and the sword responds to her. Red root fills the pommel, Arthur’s armor forms around Bree, and Vera says farewell. Lord Davis orders the Legendborn to stop Bree, but they hesitate. Arthur takes control of Bree’s body and voice, accuses Davis of betraying the crown by bringing enemies to innocent blood, and Davis flees into a tunnel.

Nick calls to Bree, but Arthur recognizes Nick as Lancelot rather than as Arthur’s Scion. Bree understands that Nick was Called by Lancelot, while Bree herself is Arthur’s true Scion. Rhaz and the demon army interrupt the revelation, and Rhaz orders the demons to kill Bree.

Arthur summons the knights, but Bree resists the command because she refuses to let more people die for her. Bree raises a wall of red flame between the Legendborn and the demons, then fights with Arthur’s strength, Excalibur, a conjured shield, and her own root and Bloodcraft. Bree destroys imps, battles a hellbear, and struggles to survive the hounds until Sel intervenes with aether spears.

The barrier falls, and Sel, Tor, Nick, Greer, and the other Legendborn join the fight against the remaining demons. When Rhaz uses the hellbear as a distraction and attacks Bree, Bree’s Bloodcraft lets Bree move fast enough to impale him with Excalibur. As Rhaz dies, he warns that other demons are hidden among them and that the Line of Morgaine is rising. Bree, Arthur, and her Medium power answer together that they will rise against it.

After Rhaz dissolves, Bree nearly collapses from the combined force of Vera’s power, Arthur’s presence, and her own magic. Arthur seizes control again and demands that the Legendborn kneel to their king. Bree rejects this, but Sel kneels first, followed by Sarah and the others; Nick kneels too, devastated. Arthur tells them that a leader must be a bridge, then recedes. Bree returns Excalibur to the stone, realizes Arthur is now part of her, releases the kneeling Legendborn, and collapses.
