Chapter 15

Overview

William becomes Bree’s first sympathetic guide inside the Order, healing her, steadying her after the night’s trauma, and choosing to teach rather than interrogate her. In the hidden chambers beneath the Lodge, Bree learns the Order’s origin, the structure of Scions and Squires, and the catastrophic meaning of Camlann.

The chapter reframes Nick’s danger as far larger than one attack: Arthur’s Awakening could save humanity or doom every Legendborn Line if he falls. Bree also learns that Sel was bound to Nick as a child Kingsmage, complicating her view of him, and she notices unexplained damage around Lord Davis’s former Kingsmage record.

Summary

After William declares Nick, Lord Davis, Evan, and Victoria stable, William leaves Sarah and Russ to watch the infirmary and takes Bree deeper into the Lodge. In the elevator, William checks Bree’s healed forearm wounds and then uses aether to heal the painful injury on Bree’s cheek, noting that Bree is acclimating to aether quickly for a Onceborn.

As William leads Bree through the lower level, William admits that he knows Bree is hiding something but says he is not trying to expose or corner her. William rejects Sel’s suspicion that Bree is an uchel, says he trusts Nick, and tells Bree that Nick might not have survived without Bree. The comment overwhelms Bree with guilt and trauma from the night’s violence, and William helps Bree through a bout of vomiting before offering comfort, tea, and a direct question about whether Bree still wants to remain in the Order’s world. Bree thinks of her grieving father and her mother, then answers that she is sure.

William brings Bree to the Lodge’s hidden lower chambers for a Legendborn crash course. He explains that the lower levels hold secret artifacts and records, then reveals the Wall of Ages, a massive silver record of the thirteen Round Table bloodlines and their Scions. William explains the Order’s Welsh roots, the difference between Onceborn and Legendborn, and Merlin’s Spell of Eternity, which bound the surviving knights’ spirits to their bloodlines so their heirs could fight the Shadowborn.

Bree reacts to the Wall’s grandeur with frustration and grief because her own family history was denied the same kind of preservation after Emancipation. William explains that a Scion is not just any descendant but the single eligible heir who can inherit a knight’s power, usually between ages sixteen and twenty-two. He shows Bree how the Wall conceals and reveals names, explains that the Order built Carolina and later Early College to gather and train eligible Scions near Gates, and identifies several current Scions, their ranks, powers, and Squires, including William, Fitz, Pete, Felicity, Victoria, and Nick.

When Bree questions the burden placed on lower-ranked Scions, William insists their early Calls are part of the Order’s duty, though he admits the current situation is abnormal. William explains Camlann: if all thirteen Scions Awaken and claim Squires, Arthur’s Scion will lead the Round Table against a demon plague, but if a fully Awakened Arthur is killed by Shadowborn blood, all Legendborn Lines will be broken and humanity will lose its defenders. Bree understands that Nick may be drawn toward a fate he never wanted and learns the last Arthur was Called around 1775.

Before leaving, Bree notices a black marble connected to Nick’s star on the Wall. William explains that the most powerful Merlin child of a generation is taken from their family and bound by the Kingsmage Oath to protect Arthur’s Scion for life, revealing the formal bond between Selwyn Kane and Nick. Bree feels new sympathy for Sel, then notices Lord Davis’s former Kingsmage, Isaac Sorenson, whose marble is intact but surrounded by deep, claw-like slashes; William cannot explain the damage, and Bree follows him back upstairs.
