Chapter 46
Overview
Bree accepts Nick’s shocking offer to become his Squire, choosing to stay and fight rather than leave the Order behind. The decision exposes the Order’s racism and resentment as members attack Bree verbally and physically, forcing Sel to rescue her.
Nick and Bree briefly celebrate their future bond and Nick’s plan to have Sel administer the Warrior’s Oath after Arthur Calls. The moment turns dangerous when Isaac appears, overwhelms Bree with red-eyed power, and renders her unconscious.
Summary
After Nick publicly offers Bree the position of his Squire, the ballroom erupts in shock. Bree freezes under the attention of the Order, realizing that accepting would bind her to Nick, the Line of Arthur, and the Order’s dangerous mission, possibly preventing her from leaving after uncovering answers about Faye’s death.
Sel urges Bree to respond. Bree looks at Nick and thinks of their bond, her mother’s hidden memory, and the choice between running and fighting as Camlann approaches. Choosing to move forward like Faye, Bree accepts Nick’s offer clearly in front of everyone.
The acceptance triggers outrage from many in the crowd. Vaughn’s mother and other Order members hurl racist and classist insults at Bree, accusing Bree of stealing a future from Vaughn and tainting the Line. Sel physically pulls Bree away while Whitty, Greer, Sarah, and Evan help block the angry crowd, then Sel runs Bree through the building to safety.
Bree insists on seeing Nick, so Sel hides Bree in a dark room and leaves to retrieve him. When Sel returns with Nick, the three silently register the meaning of Bree’s choice: Nick and Bree are now set on a path toward formal oaths and lifelong bonds. Sel leaves, and Nick and Bree celebrate with joy, intimacy, and a renewed sense of shared purpose.
An attendant interrupts and tells Nick that Nick’s father needs him immediately. Before leaving, Nick promises that in five minutes he and Bree will be together again and that Sel will administer the Warrior’s Oath as soon as Arthur Calls, making Bree Legendborn and formally bonded to Nick.
After Nick leaves, Bree searches for her shoes, expecting Nick to return when another knock comes. Instead, Isaac enters. His red-glowing eyes seize Bree’s attention, the smell of hot bile overwhelms her, and before Bree can scream, Bree loses consciousness.
