Bree gets Alice upstairs and into bed after Isaac’s Bloodcraft attack. Alice is feverish, soaked in sweat, and trapped in nightmares, while Bree sobs and begs her grandmother’s spirit for help. Bree’s grandmother says she is using all her power to call back to the old mother and cannot intervene directly.

Another ancestral presence, Jessie, takes control. Jessie identifies herself as a healer from three generations back and uses Bree’s immunity and power as a substitute for healing herbs. Red mage flame pours from Bree’s palms over Alice, draining Bree’s strength but breaking through Isaac’s damage.

Alice wakes and remembers the man with red eyes and fangs, the house off campus, Bree tied up, and the theft of her memories. Alice realizes Bree knew the people involved, so Bree finally tells Alice everything about the Order, the Lines, the attacks, and Lord Davis’s plan.

After Alice changes clothes and Bree recovers enough to move, Bree weighs whether she has any real choice but to leave as Lord Davis demanded. Bree fears that staying will put Alice and Bree’s father in Isaac’s reach, but Bree also realizes Davis may already be moving to force Nick into danger and make him take up Excalibur.

Bree prepares herself to act, worried that Davis will expose Nick to more Shadowborn and endanger everyone, especially Sel. Alice insists on coming with Bree. Bree tries to refuse because Davis has already caused deaths, hidden the truth about Faye, and now wants a war, but Alice answers that Bree’s fight is hers too.
