Chapter 14
Overview
In the aftermath of the attack, the chapter gathers around its wounded while William struggles to stabilize Nick, Lord Davis, Evan, and Victoria. Sel’s fury and suspicion make Bree feel even more isolated, but the discussion reveals that the Shadowborn attack was likely strategic and aimed at Nick as Arthur’s heir.
The chapter expands the threat from a single demon encounter to a looming war: greater demons can plan, possibly pass as human, and may be targeting the Legendborn succession. Fitz’s warning about Camlann forces Bree to confront how little Nick has told her and sets up William’s promised explanation of the Order’s true stakes.
Summary
In the Lodge’s basement infirmary, Bree watches William treat the wounded after the hellhound and uchel attack. Nick, Lord Davis, Evan, and Victoria are laid out on metal tables; Victoria has a chest wound, Lord Davis has a broken spine, and Nick has a cracked skull. William moves between them with silver aether, treating the most dangerous injuries first while Bree trembles with guilt over not reaching Nick sooner.
The infirmary setting triggers Bree’s memories of the hospital after her mother’s death, but she forces herself back to the present. Sel bursts in, frantic about Nick, and William tells Sel that Nick is stable but unconscious while Lord Davis is still in danger. Sel warns that Evan and the other Squires and Scions cannot die either, framing the attack as part of a larger pattern: the ninth attack in two weeks and the first appearance of an uchel in years.
Sel argues that the Shadowborn planned the attack because the pack knew the chapter would gather, scatter, and expose the Scion of Arthur. When Sel notices Bree, Sel immediately suspects Bree’s presence is connected to the attack. Sarah defends Bree, saying the uchel took Bree hostage and Bree tried to save Nick, but Sel advances on Bree, accuses Bree of lying, and threatens to uncover whether Bree helped the demons. Bree denies it, frightened but refusing to run.
After Sel leaves to arrange Russ and Felicity’s Warrior’s Oath once Felicity wakes, Sarah apologizes and tells Bree she belongs with them. Bree privately rejects that comfort because Bree knows she is still hiding the truth about why she joined the Order. Trying to move attention away from herself, Bree asks what the uchel was, and Sarah explains that lesser demons, isels, may look animalistic when corporeal, while greater demons, uchels, appear more human. Russ adds that the strongest goruchel are said to pass as human, which terrifies Bree because Sel has already accused Bree of being one.
When Bree asks why the demons wanted Nick, the Legendborn reveal that Nick is their king, or will be if he Awakens. Sarah questions whether Nick’s Awakening is guaranteed, but Fitz angrily says the Lines are being Called in order and that Nick’s Awakening would lead to Camlann. Fitz resents the higher-ranked Lines for acting as if they are not at war while lower-ranked Scions awaken and die, then storms out. Bree asks what Camlann is, prompting William to decide it is time to explain the Legendborn history and stakes Bree has not been told.
