Chapter 43

Overview

Bree turns to Patricia and Mariah for root help, openly revealing Faye’s hidden message and the Bloodcraft inheritance. In the cemetery ritual, Bree dismantles the emotional wall around After-Bree and discovers that Bree is also a Medium when Bree’s grandmother, Mrs. Charles, possesses Bree.

The chapter shifts Bree’s grief from containment to integration and gives Bree a new path toward answers: Mrs. Charles will call on an older maternal ancestor who may know the origin and control of Bree’s power. Mariah’s warning makes clear that opening Bree to the dead brings danger as well as guidance.

Summary

After class, Bree waits in the unmarked grave section of the cemetery, feeling the place react to her search for root. Patricia and Mariah arrive with offerings, and Bree apologizes for their earlier conflict. Bree explains the contents of Faye’s box, including the Bloodcraft revelation, because Bree wants help contacting an ancestor who can explain what Bree is and why the bargain exists.

Patricia admits that Bloodcraft is so shunned that Patricia cannot explain Bree’s abilities, but Patricia agrees Bree deserves answers. Mariah also agrees to help, though Mariah warns that there is no guarantee which ancestor will respond. Bree clarifies that Bree does not want to contact Faye, but someone farther back in the family line.

The three form a triangle around offerings and begin the ritual. Patricia guides Bree to focus on love for Faye and then extend that love backward to Bree’s grandmother. When Bree’s inner wall blocks the connection, Bree consciously dismantles the defenses that divided Before-Bree from After-Bree. Bree unwinds the rage created by Faye’s death and accepts that pain as part of Bree, not all of Bree.

Mariah follows the ancestral thread and reaches a powerful woman, but the contact becomes intense. Energy rushes back into Bree, and Bree’s grandmother possesses Bree, greeting Bree with a dry, familiar impatience. Afterward, Bree struggles with the sensation of sharing Bree’s body, while Mariah explains that possession is rare but part of Mediumcraft.

Patricia theorizes that Bree’s Mediumcraft may have intertwined unpredictably with the family’s death-triggered Bloodcraft, and Bree realizes that trauma and Bree’s effort to contain After-Bree may have delayed the manifestation of this branch of power. Bree’s grandmother, Mrs. Charles, cannot answer everything directly; instead, Mrs. Charles will act as a lighthouse or signpost to summon an older maternal ancestor who may explain Bree’s power and teach Bree control.

Mrs. Charles proves present and opinionated, even chastising Bree from inside Bree’s body. Patricia grounds Bree with food and juice, and Mariah drives Bree back to campus. Before Bree leaves, Mariah warns Bree to focus, keep Mrs. Charles contained, and guard against other ancestors and unsettled spirits now that Bree is more open. Patricia thanks Bree for letting them in and says Patricia is proud of Bree.
