CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Harry kneels by the dying Severus Snape as Voldemort’s voice echoes through Hogwarts, granting a one-hour ceasefire and demanding Harry surrender in the Forbidden Forest. Shaken, Harry, Ron, and Hermione return to a devastated Great Hall where the wounded are treated and the dead—including Fred, Lupin, and Tonks—are laid out. Overwhelmed by guilt, Harry rushes to the headmaster’s office with Snape’s collected memories.

In the Pensieve, Harry witnesses Severus Snape’s childhood: his fascination with Lily Evans, the tension with Petunia, and the beginnings of his friendship with Lily despite poverty and a troubled home. On the Hogwarts Express, Snape and Lily clash with James Potter and Sirius Black; at Sorting, Lily joins Gryffindor and Snape Slytherin. As they grow, Lily condemns Snape’s Dark-leaning friends, and after James humiliates Snape, Snape severs their friendship by calling Lily “Mudblood.”

The memories jump to adulthood: Snape begs Dumbledore to protect Lily after relaying part of the prophecy to Voldemort. After Lily’s death, Snape, devastated, agrees to protect Harry for Lily’s sake and serve as Dumbledore’s agent. Over years, Snape spies, resists fleeing like Karkaroff, and earns Dumbledore’s guarded respect. When Dumbledore is fatally cursed by the ring Horcrux, Dumbledore orders Snape to kill him at the right time to spare Draco and protect the students if Voldemort takes Hogwarts.

Snape resents Dumbledore’s secrecy about Harry, but Dumbledore insists Harry’s nature reflects Lily’s and that Voldemort fears their soul-level connection. Dumbledore instructs Snape: when Voldemort keeps Nagini closely guarded, Harry can be told the truth. In a revelation, Dumbledore states a fragment of Voldemort’s soul lives in Harry; Voldemort cannot die while it remains. Therefore, Harry must die by Voldemort’s hand. Snape, horrified, reveals his enduring love for Lily by conjuring a silver doe Patronus and agrees to continue the plan.

Further memories show Snape Confunding Mundungus to propose decoys for Harry’s escape, accidentally severing George’s ear while targeting a Death Eater, and later delivering the sword of Gryffindor via the silver doe. Finally, Snape consults Dumbledore’s portrait about timing and secrecy. Harry rises from the Pensieve, armed with the truth that Snape protected him out of love for Lily, that Dumbledore’s death was deliberate, and that Harry himself must sacrifice his life to end Voldemort.
