CHAPTER EIGHT

Overview

At Bill and Fleur’s joyous wedding, Harry hides in plain sight while old friends and odd guests mingle. Viktor Krum denounces Xenophilius’s symbol as Grindelwald’s, and Elphias Doge and Auntie Muriel air troubling rumors about Dumbledore and Ariana, tying everything to Godric’s Hollow. Harry also connects Voldemort’s search to wandmaker Gregorovitch. The celebration shatters when Kingsley’s Patronus announces the Ministry’s fall and Scrimgeour’s death.

Summary

On the wedding afternoon, Harry uses Polyjuice Potion to appear as “Cousin Barny” and helps seat guests with Ron, Fred, and George. Notable arrivals include Lupin and Tonks, Hagrid, and the Lovegoods; Luna quickly sees through Harry’s disguise. Eccentric Auntie Muriel arrives, brusque and sharp-tongued. Viktor Krum appears, unsettling Ron, as the ceremony begins and Bill and Fleur are bonded amid magical fanfare.

At the reception, the marquee transforms into an open canopy and dancing begins. Harry sits with Luna, Ron, and Hermione until Krum confronts them, furious that Xenophilius wears a triangular symbol Krum claims is Grindelwald’s sign. Harry suggests the Lovegoods may not know its meaning. Spurred by Krum’s wand, Harry recalls Gregorovitch, linking him to Voldemort’s search for wand lore after Harry’s wand’s strange behavior.

Later, Harry approaches Elphias Doge about Rita Skeeter’s insinuations. Auntie Muriel intrudes, gleefully recounting rumors: that Dumbledore’s sister, Ariana, may have been a hidden Squib, possibly confined by their mother Kendra, and that Aberforth fought Albus at Ariana’s funeral. Doge insists Ariana was simply ill, but Muriel cites Bathilda Bagshot as a likely source for Skeeter and reveals that the Dumbledores lived in Godric’s Hollow, where Bathilda still resides.

Shaken that Dumbledore never told him of their shared ties to Godric’s Hollow, Harry broods as Hermione returns from the dance floor. Before he can share his thoughts, a silver lynx Patronus descends and, in Kingsley Shacklebolt’s voice, announces catastrophic news: the Ministry has fallen, Scrimgeour is dead, and the enemy is coming.
