Overview
Harry and Hagrid survive their crash and reach the Burrow via the Tonkses’ Portkey. Staggered arrivals reveal grave costs: George loses an ear, and Bill reports Mad-Eye’s death after Mundungus fled. Suspicion of betrayal rises yet remains unresolved. Harry’s wand behaved independently against Voldemort, and he later witnesses Voldemort torturing Ollivander.
Summary
Harry regains consciousness after the crash and learns from Ted Tonks that Hagrid is alive and that their protections repelled Voldemort. After a brief, tense exchange with Andromeda Tonks about Tonks’s safety, Harry and Hagrid Portkey to the Burrow, where Mrs. Weasley and Ginny confirm that several groups have not yet returned.
Lupin and an unconscious, bleeding George arrive next; Lupin verifies Harry’s identity and explains the suspicion of betrayal. Harry recounts disarming Stan Shunpike, prompting Lupin’s warning that Expelliarmus marks Harry out. Lupin identifies George’s cursed wound as Snape’s Sectumsempra. Kingsley and Hermione arrive, confirm Voldemort can fly, and share signs of a Ministry cover-up of Death Eater escapes.
Inside, George wakes and jokes weakly as the family rallies around him. Ron and Tonks return safely; Tonks reports dueling Bellatrix. Anxiety deepens until Bill and Fleur land and report Mad-Eye Moody’s death after Mundungus panicked and Disapparated, leaving Moody exposed to Voldemort’s killing curse. The group toasts Mad-Eye and debates how the date of the move was leaked; Fleur argues for carelessness rather than a full betrayal. Harry insists on trusting everyone present, though Lupin pointedly recalls James’s misplaced trust.
Lupin and Bill depart to recover Moody’s body. Overwhelmed by guilt and danger to others, Harry declares he must leave, but the Weasleys and friends urge him to stay. Discussing the chase, Harry insists his wand acted of its own accord to repel Voldemort, a claim others doubt. Distressed, Harry steps outside, mourning Dumbledore and the fallen.
Harry’s scar flares and he involuntarily witnesses Voldemort torturing Ollivander over Lucius Malfoy’s destroyed wand and the wands’ shared connection. Shaken, Harry recounts the vision to Ron and Hermione, who warn him to guard his mind as Voldemort consolidates power across the wizarding world.
