CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE

Harry awakens alone in a bright, misty hall resembling an empty, purified King’s Cross. Nearby, a small, flayed creature whimpers. Albus Dumbledore appears, whole and serene, and leads Harry to seats. Dumbledore confirms Harry is not truly dead: Voldemort’s Killing Curse destroyed only the fragment of Voldemort’s soul within Harry.

Dumbledore explains that when Voldemort used Harry’s blood to resurrect himself, he took Lily’s sacrificial protection into his own body, tethering Harry’s life to Voldemort’s while Voldemort lives. The maimed creature is beyond help. Dumbledore also theorizes that, due to their unique connections and twin wand cores, Harry’s wand absorbed and regurgitated Voldemort’s power during their graveyard duel, overpowering the borrowed wand.

Shifting to the Deathly Hallows, Dumbledore admits his youthful obsession with mastering death, his friendship with Grindelwald, and the tragedy of Ariana’s death that ended their plans. He recounts winning the Elder Wand from Grindelwald but refusing political power thereafter, fearing his own weakness. He confesses trying the cursed Resurrection Stone and deems himself unworthy to unite the Hallows, contrasting his failures with Harry’s selflessness.

Dumbledore reveals the Peverell origins of the Hallows and confirms Harry’s Invisibility Cloak is Ignotus’s heirloom. He says Voldemort likely knew only of the Elder Wand, not the Hallows’ true nature, and pursued it to cover his perceived weakness. Dumbledore intended Snape to end up with the wand, but events diverged.

Finally, Dumbledore tells Harry he has a choice: move on or return. Seeing that returning may end Voldemort and spare the living further suffering, Harry chooses to go back. As the mist closes in, Dumbledore assures him that what happens inside the mind can still be real.
