Overview
Molly discovers that Georgia, her OB office receptionist, is actually her presumed-dead mother Eloise. Shock turns to anger until Evie and Adam reveal Eloise’s postpartum psychosis and a near-infanticide that prompted the 9/11 disappearance.
After tentative conversations and proof of Eloise’s presence on 9/11, Molly begins to soften. When labor brings complications, Georgia supports Molly through a successful version and the birth of Molly’s daughter.
Summary
At a restaurant, Adam mistakes Georgia, Molly’s OB receptionist, for Eloise—Molly’s presumed-dead mother. Reeling, Molly goes home with Jesse, receives a letter and number from Georgia, and refuses contact. On Christmas, Evie reveals Eloise’s postpartum psychosis and that she once tried to drown infant Molly; Adam admits denial and withholding the truth to protect Molly. Hurt, Molly leaves.
Over subsequent weeks, Molly shuts out family, vents to friend Tabs, and throws herself into work, including a meningitis B college vaccination clinic where Toby calls out her strain. Jesse urges perspective, sharing a case about reinvention and unreliable narratives. Evie later offers an “olive branch,” clarifies her love for Molly, and Molly tells Adam he may talk to Georgia.
Molly meets Georgia at home, then for lunch, hearing about Eloise’s abusive upbringing, psychosis, and decision to vanish to protect Molly. Georgia is stable on treatment and returned to prevent Molly from suffering PPP. Their rapport tentatively grows over shared quirks and stories.
Jesse gifts a Richard Drew photo from 9/11 showing Eloise dust-covered, turning back toward Manhattan, proof of her turmoil that day. Moved, Molly dreams of being rescued by her mother as a baby.
On April 1, Molly’s water breaks. The fetus is transverse; Dr. Mantillard performs a painful external cephalic version, assisted by Dr. Hayes. Jesse texts Georgia, who arrives to support Molly; the maneuver succeeds. Hours later, after induced labor and intense pushing, Molly delivers a healthy daughter, feeling fierce, immediate love and a new understanding of both Evie’s devotion and Georgia’s sacrifice.
