Summary
At the twenty-week ultrasound, Molly and Jesse abandon their plan to be surprised and learn they are having a girl, delighting in first clear images of the baby. Over Thanksgiving with Jesse’s family, a movie about childhood cancer triggers Molly’s fears; Sara comforts her, stressing that parents can’t control everything.
When Jesse is called to California to assist on an arson-related wildfire case, a mid-December blizzard hits Rhode Island. During storm response, Molly drives to a nursing home with power issues; the utility restores electricity, but outside, a plow’s spray startles her, she trips on a hidden curb, and falls hard on her abdomen.
Panicked by stillness and cramps, Molly drives to her OB’s office, where receptionist Georgia finds the doctor away and rushes Molly to the hospital. In the ER, the fetal heartbeat is present, but doctors warn of possible placental abruption and preterm labor at twenty-three weeks, outlining interventions, surgical risks, and a low survival rate. Georgia stays, coaches Molly through contractions, and shares that she once lost a baby; Molly’s contractions gradually space out.
Jesse arrives at dawn, and Molly confirms the contractions have stopped. She is admitted overnight and then ordered five days of bed rest and light duties afterward. Toby reorganizes work to keep Molly out of the field, and Jesse hovers protectively as she recuperates.
On her first night off bed rest, at dinner with her father and Evie, Molly encounters Georgia at a nearby baby shower and thanks her. When Molly’s father approaches, he sees Georgia and says, “Eloise?”—suggesting Georgia is someone from his past and upending what Molly believes about her family.
