Part Two: Eloise — Chapter 2

September 11, 2001: Eloise crosses the Brooklyn Bridge with evacuees, learns Adam’s flight path likely spared him, and, penniless, steals a ticket and cash from a young mother to reach Atlanta. In a motel, her psychosis returns; she breaks a mirror and cuts her wrist. EMTs save her, and at Grady she’s restrained and evaluated by Dr. Baxter, then transferred to the state psychiatric hospital, where Dr. Gruner treats her. She adopts the name “Georgia,” denies having a child until lactation betrays her; she finally claims her baby died and receives a working diagnosis of bipolar disorder with psychosis.

Hospital life introduces Vera (awaiting an NGRI hearing) and group routines; antipsychotics quiet the Devil’s voice. In parallel college flashbacks, Eloise meets Adam via Evie, resists him for Evie’s sake, then begins a secret relationship, causing a rupture and later reconciliation with Evie. Eloise and Adam fall in love, make love, and, after graduation, elope at City Hall with Evie. On their wedding night Evie suffers a miscarriage and emergency hysterectomy; Eloise vows lifelong support.

Stabilized, “Georgia” is discharged with meds but no ID. She pawns her rings, returns to the motel, and thanks the maid who found her. Seeking identity papers, she is assaulted by a forger who promises documents; the next morning, the maid—Ximena—rescues, bathes, and shelters her with daughters Mercedes and Milagros. Ximena gets her a housekeeping job at the Shadyside; Georgia learns the grind and builds a fragile routine.

Georgia watches 9/11 coverage, grieves, and hires a PI, who shows her a missing flyer for “Eloise Ambrose” listing Adam’s number—proof he is alive. Ximena’s wary teen, Mercedes, confronts Georgia about her nonexistent past; Georgia admits she’s hiding from danger and asks for secrecy. An envelope later arrives with forged Georgia Gilligan documents.

Believing she’s ready, Georgia stops her meds, flies to New York on 11/11 to reconcile. In Central Park’s North Woods she discovers a memorial service for herself, sees exhausted Evie and grieving Adam tenderly caring for baby Molly, and realizes Molly is safe and loved. Concluding they are better without her, she leaves unseen, returns to Atlanta, cuts her hair and discards her ribbon, sinks into despair, and hears the Devil’s voice return.
