Summary
After Eloise’s brain surgery, a doctor warns Molly that the prognosis is uncertain and that Eloise may not regain consciousness. Allowed one visitor, Molly enters the ICU while Jesse waits outside. She is struck by Eloise’s frailty and the possibility of losing her again.
Molly reflects on the abandonment of her childhood and the recent reunion, grieving the time they lost and the brevity of second chances. She questions fate and her own profession, admitting that preparedness cannot prevent tragedy, only protect the ordinary days that give life meaning.
She recalls pushing Georgia away when she first returned and vows not to waste any more time. Framing survival as the preservation of everyday life, Molly squeezes Eloise’s limp hand and finally says the words she has withheld: “I love you.”
Overwhelmed, Molly bows her head and weeps for the unspoken conversations. She imagines a faint response—I love you, too—unsure whether it is real or a dream, but clinging to the need to hold on to love in the face of uncertainty.
