Part Three — Chapter 4

Eloise arrives at Evie’s house to find boxes and learns Evie is moving out. She confronts Evie over the long-held lie that Eloise tried to drown Molly; Evie claims she had no choice, but Eloise refuses to accept it and leaves, closing that chapter of their relationship.

Back at Molly’s, Eloise installs a phoenix-and-tree mosaic in Adie’s nursery. While they admire the work, Adie laughs for the first time, prompting Eloise to share a tradition that the laugher throws a party. They plan a small celebration, and Eloise reflects on past love and the mosaic’s symbolism of rupture and return.

At the intimate party with Molly, Jesse, Adam, and Adie, Eloise proposes a New York trip before Molly returns to work. Afterward, Adam stays to clean up. He reveals he obtained a void ab initio of his marriage, asks for forgiveness for failing Eloise years ago, and then asks her on a date. Eloise, moved, agrees.

In New York, Eloise and Molly take an early tour of the 9/11 Museum. Guided by Tipper, they descend past remnants like the slurry wall, the Last Column, damaged beams, and Ladder Company Three’s fire truck. Overwhelmed by memories, Eloise leans on Molly but chooses to bear witness.

They view the blue memorial wall and learn many remains are still unidentified; Molly names her friend Tabs’s father, Francisco Cubero. In Memorial Hall, Eloise finds her own old photo among the victims’ portraits, confronting the life she left behind. At the South Pool, Molly shows Eloise her engraved name and reveals she left a ribbon there every year. Eloise struggles with guilt for surviving but, at Molly’s urging, touches the Survivor Tree and begins to accept that she belongs among the living.

Later, Eloise prays inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral, sensing her sister’s presence and feeling unburdened. Reuniting with Molly and Adie outside a Starbucks, Eloise steps into the crosswalk toward them, momentarily blinded by sun and possibility, embracing a tentative future.
