Summary
Offred lies trembling in bed after the Ceremony, describing herself as brittle and on the verge of shattering. She longs for a body to love and remembers lying with Luke while pregnant, awake during a thunderstorm as their unborn child kicked.
Confronted with isolation and the deprivation of love, Offred meditates on how memory fades and how self-comfort feels lifeless. She frames herself as an empty room where things once happened, haunted by dust-like remnants.
Offred then constructs three possible fates for Luke: first, that he was shot and lies dead in the underbrush, an image she details through his clothes and a hoped-for quick death. Second, that he is alive but imprisoned, aged and wounded, enduring painful confinement and humiliation. Third, that he escaped across a border, was sheltered—perhaps by Quakers—and connected with a resistance.
She grounds herself in belief: that a clandestine message from Luke may arrive unexpectedly, urging patience and promising rescue and reunion with their daughter. Aware these beliefs contradict each other, Offred chooses to hold all of them to stay ready for any truth. Reflecting on a gravestone inscribed “In Hope,” she questions whether Luke still hopes, reaffirming hope as her means of survival.
