Night — Chapter 16
Overview
Under threat after Serena Joy confronts her, Offred sits in a suspended calm, contemplating suicide and escape. A black van marked as the Eyes arrives. Nick appears, claims the men are Mayday, and urges Offred to go. In front of Serena Joy and the Commander, Offred is taken away, fate ambiguous.
Summary
Offred waits in her room after Serena Joy’s confrontation, feeling oddly serene and detached. As dusk deepens, she contemplates drastic options—arson, escape, confession, violence, or suicide—yet none feels decisive. Fatigue and resignation settle in, and she imagines the hanged Handmaid in the house as an insistent double urging an end.
A black van, marked with the Eye, arrives. Offred regrets inaction as footsteps approach. Unexpectedly, Nick enters first. He whispers that the men are Mayday and uses Offred’s real name, urging her to trust him and go. Offred, suspicious but with no better option, chooses to accept this chance.
The men escort Offred downstairs at a measured pace. Serena Joy and the Commander confront the scene—Serena incredulous and accusatory, the Commander worried and already distancing himself. When asked, the men cite “violation of state secrets,” increasing the Commander’s anxiety about his own vulnerability.
Cora begins to cry, devastated by the loss of her hope for a child; Rita watches. Offred allows herself to be led to the van, recognizing that she has surrendered to strangers. She steps into the vehicle, uncertain whether she is moving toward rescue or imprisonment.
