Overview
The household assembles for the Ceremony, watching propaganda-laced news before the Commander performs a controlled Bible reading. Offred recalls her family’s attempted escape and Moira’s failed hospital ruse and brutal punishment. After the sterile Ceremony, Offred secretly roams at night; Nick kisses her and reveals the Commander wants a clandestine meeting, shifting their power dynamic.
Summary
Offred descends to the sitting room for the Ceremony, observing Serena Joy’s curated domestic display and longing to steal a token for power. Cora, Rita, and Nick assemble; Serena arrives and tunes through television to the news, which shows battlefield “victories,” Quakers arrested as smugglers, and forced Black resettlement. Offred watches skeptically, hungry for information.
A flashback interrupts: a Saturday in September when Offred, Luke, and their daughter drove toward the border with forged documents and a sedative plan for the child. Tension rises at checkpoints as they aim to pass as day-trippers.
The Commander enters, breaches protocol by not waiting at the door, unlocks the household Bible, and reads creation and the Rachel–Leah–Bilhah passages used to justify Handmaids. Offred recalls Red Center indoctrination and a clandestine washroom exchange with Moira, who planned a fake illness escape. Moira is later returned, tortured in the feet as punishment, a warning to all.
After a prayer led by the Commander and Serena’s stifled weeping, the Ceremony proceeds: Offred lies between Serena’s legs while the Commander has sex, a duty devoid of intimacy. When he finishes, Serena dismisses Offred coldly, refusing even the prescribed rest.
Back in her room, Offred rubs hoarded butter on her skin, then illegally sneaks to the sitting room to steal a withering daffodil as a talisman. Nick catches her; the two share a charged, risky kiss before he delivers a message: the Commander wants to see her privately in his office tomorrow, hinting at a dangerous change in their relationship.
