Night — Chapter 14
Overview
Serena Joy covertly sends Offred to Nick’s garage room during a storm, arranging privacy for conception. Offred and Nick share an awkward, transactional encounter that turns tender but explicitly avoids “romance.” Offred later questions her own responses, revising her memory and confronting shame, desire, and the betrayal such desire implies.
Summary
In oppressive night heat and a looming storm, Offred sits in darkness, noting the searchlights are off and suspecting Serena Joy arranged it. At midnight Serena arrives, quietly leading Offred through the kitchen and instructing her to exit, turn right, and enter the garage apartment where Nick waits. Serena stays behind to cover for her.
Offred slips outside, ascends the dark stairs, and knocks. After first narrating a romanticized version of consuming passion, she retracts it and recounts the actual scene: Nick, in shirtsleeves, offers her a cigarette. Their initial exchange is tense; Nick jokes crudely about “squirting it into a bottle,” suggesting resentment at being used, then admits he is paid.
They defuse the stiffness with dated movie banter, acknowledging they are acting roles. The nostalgic talk saddens Offred and she begins to cry; Nick comforts her, then leads her to the fold-out bed, asking for “no romance,” meaning no risks or heroics.
They have sex, functional yet briefly tender. Afterwards, Offred revises details in her mind, admitting uncertainty about what happened “exactly.” She imagines Serena downstairs judging her and feels that her own response, rather than the act itself, is the betrayal. She wishes to be shameless or ignorant, recognizing how memory and desire blur under coercion.
