A childhood memory surfaces: a TV documentary about a Nazi camp commandant’s mistress who claimed ignorance and later killed herself. Offred reflects on how easily people humanize oppressors to survive, noting the woman’s pride in appearance and the temptations of denial.

The absurdity of her own position triggers uncontrollable laughter. Fearing discovery and punishment for inappropriate emotion, Offred stifles it by hiding in the closet. There she touches the scratched Latin motto, which now sounds like a command more than a prayer, though its meaning remains practically useless to her.
