Night — Chapter 12

Night presses on Offred as she sits by the window. She spots Nick crossing the lawn; desire flares between them, but Offred closes the curtain, choosing restraint. She reflects that people cannot replace one another, recalling the Commander’s claim that numbers don’t add up to interchangeability and Moira’s dictum about behavior over feeling.

Offred remembers the night before her family’s escape attempt. While walking through their home to preserve it in memory, Luke raises the problem of their cat. Realizing the risk of leaving evidence, Luke kills the cat in the garage, an act that teaches Offred how turning a being into an “it” precedes killing. Despite this sacrifice, their plan fails; someone betrays them, and Offred recalls the sickening drop of knowing they were turned in.

Back in the present, Offred tries to summon images of Luke and her child, but their faces blur and fade. She fears forgetting them and decides to pray. Her prayer contrasts with Red Center rituals, where Aunt Lydia and Aunt Elizabeth enforced rigid postures and taught abasement and emptiness. She remembers Janine being scolded for emotional excess and the doctrine that ignorance prevents temptation.

Offred addresses God directly, questioning divine intent, asking protection for loved ones, and struggling with forgiveness for those who built Gilead. She admits temptation—both knowledge and desire—and acknowledges her fixation on suicide methods, recalling the removed chandelier and imagining the closet hook.

She ends feeling unheard and isolated, reaching for hope through rote phrases about kingdom, power, and glory, yet confessing profound loneliness and the fear she may not be able to go on.
