Salvaging
Overview
Offred begins frequent, reckless visits to Nick, distancing herself from Ofglen and the resistance. At a district Salvaging three women are hanged, followed by a Particicution where Ofglen swiftly renders a political prisoner unconscious to spare him. The next day Ofglen is replaced; the newcomer says she killed herself as the Eyes arrived. Serena Joy confronts Offred with evidence of Jezebel’s.
Summary
Offred admits her narrative is fragmented, then confesses she keeps secretly visiting Nick, taking great risks after the Commander's nights. She shares too much, even her real name, and idealizes Nick while drifting from Ofglen and the resistance. Ofglen urges spying on the Commander and offers escape, but Offred declines, wanting only to remain near Nick.
A district Salvaging is held at the former university. Aunt Lydia presides and withholds crime details; two Handmaids and a Wife are hanged. Offred tries to detach, describing the ritualized complicity as the crowd grips the ceremonial rope.
Aunt Lydia then orders a Particicution: a battered Guardian, accused of rape resulting in a baby’s death, is presented. As sanctioned fury builds, Ofglen rushes forward and knocks him unconscious before the Handmaids descend. She later tells Offred she spared a political prisoner from torture. Janine staggers past, bloodied and unmoored, clutching hair.
By the next day a new, guarded Ofglen replaces the old. Testing her, Offred is warned to forget subversive “echoes.” As they part, the new Ofglen whispers that the former Ofglen hanged herself when the Eyes came. Offred reels between terror and relief, vowing submission to survive.
Returning home, Serena Joy confronts Offred with Jezebel’s lipstick on her cloak and the sequined outfit, condemning her as a slut and threatening she’ll end up like the previous Handmaid. Offred, exposed and powerless, retreats to her room.
