Chapter 5
Overview
Ibrahim resolves to embrace life, taking Ron’s car to Fairhaven for a solo outing that restores his confidence. After a fulfilling day, he is mugged by teenagers near the police station and violently assaulted. The attack abruptly reverses his newfound momentum and raises urgent stakes for the group.
Summary
After lunch with Ron, Ibrahim reflects on a lifetime of caution and resolves to live more boldly, inspired by Ron’s freedom, Joyce’s optimism, and Elizabeth’s decisiveness. He reconsiders his earlier advice to Joyce about a dog, deciding he will support her and share in the responsibility.
Determined to venture beyond Coopers Chase, Ibrahim takes Ron’s Daihatsu to Fairhaven. He navigates parking, tries contactless payments and self-checkouts, browses an independent bookshop, and buys multiple books to support it. The outing, full of small victories, boosts his confidence and sense of connection to the world.
As time slips by, Ibrahim plans to head home, pleased with his progress and considering dropping in on Chris and Donna at the nearby police station another time. He parks near the station, feeling safe, and thinks about car washes, technology, and staying engaged with life.
Approaching his car, Ibrahim is blindsided by a teenage cyclist who snatches his phone, sending him tumbling. Laughed at and kicked by the youths, including one called Ryan, he suffers immediate pain and disorientation. Passersby rush to help; Christine is told to call an ambulance. As Ibrahim fades, he realizes his attempt to live boldly has ended in brutal violence.
