Summary
In frigid night air, Medra clings to Nyxaris as they fly far from Bloodwing. Responding to his demand for truths, Medra recounts the soul-binding, the rebellion, and the slaughter of dragons and riders—betrayals masked by lies. Nyxaris grows tense and, after a stunned silence, releases a roar of anguish.
Landing on a rocky outcrop, Nyxaris rejects the revelations as lies, then, confronted by resurfacing memories, admits he remembers being used as a weapon. He recalls obeying the highbloods, unleashing fire, and even fighting against rebelling brethren. Medra insists he was a victim, but Nyxaris refuses absolution and rages at the world.
As the fury ebbs, Nyxaris concedes Medra did right by telling him, though the truth cuts like a poisoned blade. He declares he will never be used again and would die before submitting. He sets strict terms: Medra must not summon him again unless with even greater truths, to avoid risking them both.
Torn but resolute, Medra agrees. Nyxaris urges her not to be crushed by this world, then roars to the sky and departs into the darkness, leaving their bond altered by painful truth and hard resolve.
