CHAPTER 16 - BLAKE

Before Historical Strategy begins, Blake convinces himself the odd scales he saw were a one-off, then notices Visha sit beside him. When Blake moves to leave, Visha warns it would look like fear and immediately calls out his erratic behavior and house-wide drama.

They argue over loyalty, Visha’s breakfast at House Avari’s table, and Blake’s claim that Medra wronged him. Visha challenges highblood traditions Blake is hiding behind, points out that he had choices when he fed from Medra, and insists he share responsibility. She also questions his leadership, urging him to pick a Second who won’t enable his self-destruction—offering herself if he earns back her respect.

As Rodriguez’s lecture starts, Blake stews over Visha’s blunt assessment. He admits to himself that he cares more than he wants to about Medra and their bond, and that his attempt to assert control by taking her blood only tangled his emotions further. He resolves not to spiral but also not to beg for forgiveness.

Blake searches for a middle path: he recognizes the risk of losing Medra, his house, and his dignity, yet clings to pride. The chapter closes with the conflict internally unresolved, his leadership and relationship both at a precarious point.
