Chapter 41
Overview
Aelin prepares for Arobynn’s dinner under the psychological pressure of wearing the almond-scented oil he sent, understanding it as a possessive move aimed at both Aelin and Rowan. Rowan and Aedion privately confirm that Arobynn is likely to die that night, with Aedion claiming the right to deliver the killing blow. As the captive Valg commander waits hidden in Nesryn’s carriage, Aelin emerges dressed like the terrifying queen her enemies imagine, signaling that the confrontation with Arobynn is about to begin.
Summary
Aelin prepares for the evening in her room, but the almond-scented oil Arobynn sent leaves her shaken. Aelin recognizes the oil as a deliberate violation and provocation: Arobynn wants Aelin to think of him while applying it, and he likely chose the scent because Rowan is Fae and would notice it on Aelin. After Rowan checks on Aelin through the door, Aelin steadies herself and reaches for the bottle, knowing the coming hours may change everything.
While Aelin dresses, Rowan signals Aedion to follow him to the roof so they can speak privately without straying far from Aelin. Rowan remains alert to threats in Rifthold and reflects on Aedion’s resemblance and scent as Gavriel’s son, wondering whether Aelin sent Wyrdhounds after Lorcan partly to keep Lorcan from discovering Aedion’s lineage.
Aedion correctly guesses that Aelin intends to kill Arobynn after the dinner and the business involving the Valg commander. Rowan tests Aedion’s reaction by asking what would happen if Aelin spared Arobynn or asked them to handle it instead. Aedion answers that Aelin’s choice must be respected, but if Aelin allowed others to act, Aedion would gladly join the hunt.
The conversation turns to who has the right to strike the killing blow. Aedion acknowledges Rowan’s blood oath but insists that Aedion should be the one to kill Arobynn when the time comes. Rowan accepts this, and Aedion makes clear that Arobynn’s death will not be quick because of the many debts Arobynn owes.
When Aelin emerges, Rowan and Aedion are already dressed, and the Valg commander is bound, blindfolded, and hidden in the trunk of Nesryn’s carriage outside. Aelin appears in a black velvet dress with gold dragon detailing and dramatic bat-wing combs, presenting herself as both dangerous and regal. Aedion jokes about how terrifying she looks, while Rowan is visibly struck by her appearance before regaining control.
Aelin and Rowan exchange flirtatious remarks about their clothing and appearances. Rowan says Aelin looks like the fire-breathing queen her enemies fear, and Aelin teases him about causing mortal women to combust at the sight of him. Their banter eases the tension slightly as they prepare to leave for Arobynn’s dinner and the dangerous plan surrounding the captive Valg commander.
