Chapter 27

Overview

Aelin discovers that the king can communicate through a monstrous stone Wyrdhound linked to the clock-tower gargoyles, deepening the threat posed by the Valg and the crown. Back home, Aelin and Aedion move from conflict to intimacy by sharing the stories behind their scars, and Aelin entrusts the Sword of Orynth to Aedion. After Aedion, Aelin, and Nesryn briefly find companionship in the city, Rowan arrives in Rifthold, reuniting with Aelin and shifting her support system at a crucial moment.

Summary

Aelin watches from hiding as a black stone creature rises from the sewer pool and receives the Valg commander's report. The creature resembles one of the clock-tower gargoyles, and the Eye of Elena flares beneath Aelin's suit, warning her of danger. When the creature speaks, Aelin realizes the voice is the king's, suggesting he can see and speak through the monster.

The commander reports that Aedion has not been found and that false information has sent patrols toward Fenharrow, likely because of Arobynn's interference. Aelin retreats, shaken, and decides she will still give Arobynn his Valg commander, but only after questioning one herself and then letting Chaol and Nesryn destroy the nests.

Back at the apartment, Aedion confronts Aelin for being gone twice as long as promised and for returning from the sewers. Their argument exposes Aedion's fear that he failed to protect Aelin and that her scars are his fault. To ease him, Aelin begins telling stories behind her scars, and Aedion responds with stories of his own wounds, turning the confrontation into a night of shared history and renewed trust.

During the same night, Aedion offers Aelin the Sword of Orynth, her father's blade, saying it belongs to her. Aelin refuses and insists it belongs to Aedion because he earned and preserved it. The exchange confirms Aelin's trust in Aedion and deepens their restored bond.

Two days later, Aedion grows restless from confinement, and Aelin finally agrees to take him out. Nesryn arrives with a report on new Valg nests and joins them. The three spend the evening in a rough tavern playing cards with beans, while Aelin draws Nesryn into conversation about her family and life.

After leaving the tavern, the group wanders through the slums until Aedion senses a dangerous male approaching through the fog. The stranger carries Aelin's scent, and when he appears, Aelin breaks down and runs to him. Aedion recognizes the male as Rowan, whose arrival abruptly changes the emotional balance around Aelin.
