Chapter 17
Overview
Aelin enters the royal party with Florine’s dancers and moves into position for Aedion’s rescue while maintaining her disguise under the eyes of Valg-controlled guards. Florine reveals both practical help and personal allegiance, framing Aelin’s return not only as political rebellion but as the possible rebirth of a kingdom with art and culture. From the execution platform, Aedion recognizes Aelin as she transforms her costume into a nobleman’s disguise and reaches the guards just as the dancers shatter their glass roses, triggering the operation.
Summary
After Florine’s dancers are admitted to the glass castle, Aelin waits with them in a narrow servants’ hallway before their performance. The guards do not question the troupe further, though demon-possessed men watch them closely. Aelin notes that the guard positions match Chaol’s information, but she sees few of Chaol’s allies and spots Nesryn disguised as a servant carrying food.
As Florine prepares the dancers for the “Handmaidens of Death” performance, she gives each dancer a black glass flower and leaves Aelin aside as if Aelin is merely an understudy. Florine quietly tells Aelin that Aedion is gaunt and pale but alert and ready. Florine then reveals that she understands more about Aelin than she has said and pledges that, when Aelin builds a future kingdom, Florine will bring music and dancing to it.
Florine sends the dancers into the ballroom and tells them to give the king the performance he deserves. Aelin gathers herself, focuses on rescuing Aedion rather than the tyrant who destroyed her family and people, and enters the glittering crowd with her identity and purpose fully claimed.
From Aedion’s point of view, Aedion has spent hours chained to the execution platform studying the guards for weaknesses and preparing to fight or die. The dancers’ performance briefly makes Aedion feel regret that they may be caught in the violence, but Aedion sees their dark costumes and realizes they portray Death’s Handmaidens, which he takes as fitting.
Aedion notices an extra dancer moving through the crowd: taller, broader, and marked in a way that reveals the figure is not an ordinary performer. The dancer slips behind a curtained doorway and returns transformed, using the reversible costume as a cape and moving convincingly as a swaggering nobleman. Aedion recognizes Aelin by her build and, finally, by her turquoise-and-gold eyes.
As the music swells, Aelin in disguise approaches the ring of guards around Aedion’s platform and pauses believably as if searching for something. The dancers complete their tribute by shattering their black glass roses on the floor. Aedion grins at his queen as the planned chaos begins.
