Chapter 28
Overview
Rowan’s arrival reunites Aelin with her carranam and gives her a powerful ally in Rifthold, but his presence immediately disrupts the uneasy balance around her. The chapter reveals that Aedion is Gavriel’s son, tying him directly to Maeve’s world and giving new meaning to his abilities and his mother’s secrecy.
The greater rupture comes when Aedion learns Rowan has already taken the blood oath to Aelin. What should have been a reunion of allies turns into a bitter fracture, as Aedion feels displaced and betrayed while Aelin asserts her right to choose her own sworn protector.
Summary
Aelin breaks down when Rowan appears in Rifthold, overwhelmed by relief after weeks apart. Rowan explains that he stowed away on a ship because Fae would not be welcome openly, then found Aelin by tracking her scent from the slums. Nesryn leaves, while Aedion silently leads Aelin and Rowan back to the warehouse amid immediate warrior tension between the two males.
Aelin takes Rowan to her room and bathes him, teasing him about his smell and his newly cropped hair while beginning to tell him what has happened since Wendlyn. Their closeness reestablishes their deep bond, but Rowan also reveals that losing access to his magic in Adarlan made him physically ill and dulled his senses. When Aelin offers Rowan Sam’s old clothes, the moment becomes emotionally charged, especially as Rowan comments on a black dragon-embroidered gown and says Aelin is no longer the girl who once felt overpowered by it.
Rowan hints that he has difficult news but postpones the conversation. Aelin and Rowan return to the kitchen, where Aedion greets Rowan with admiration and challenges him to train. Their guarded exchange intensifies when Rowan calls Aelin “my queen,” making clear his devotion and provoking a silent dominance struggle with Aedion.
Rowan then reveals that Aedion’s father is Gavriel, the legendary Fae warrior known as the Lion and one of Rowan’s cadre. Aedion realizes his mother likely concealed the truth and refused Fae healers to keep Maeve from discovering and claiming him. Aelin assures Aedion that the revelation changes nothing between them, but Aedion recognizes that it explains his strength, instincts, and the harsh control drilled into him as a child.
Aelin decides the truth about Gavriel must stay secret because Maeve might use it and because Aelin cannot afford another war. The fragile calm collapses when Rowan says he is blood-sworn to Aelin. Aedion, who believed the blood oath would be his, feels betrayed; Aelin defends her choice by explaining that she believed Aedion served the king and might never return. Their argument turns vicious, Aedion insults Aelin, Rowan nearly attacks, and Aelin orders Aedion to leave. Aedion storms out, shattered by the loss of the role he had built his future around.
