Chapter 11
Overview
Chaol’s secret meeting with Brullo and Ress in the Shadow Market is interrupted by Aelin, who reveals enough of her plan to show that Aedion’s rescue will involve bloodshed at the palace. By warning Chaol’s allies how to avoid the killing zone and mark themselves, Aelin proves she is protecting them even as Chaol remains worried about Dorian’s fate.
Aelin then conducts covert business at the Royal Bank while under surveillance, gathering money and possibly access for future moves. The chapter ends by emphasizing her isolation, her longing for Rowan, and a new summons from the Assassins’ Keep that pulls her back toward Arobynn’s orbit.
Summary
Chaol and Nesryn enter the Shadow Market, a dangerous neutral zone beneath Rifthold’s riverbank where illicit trade thrives. Chaol reflects that he once would have wanted to shut the place down, but now sees its criminals and vendors as resources against the king. He is injured from an earlier fight with a Valg commander and reminds himself that distraction could get people killed.
At a disguised knife stall, Chaol and Nesryn meet Brullo and Ress, who are posing as vendors. Brullo reports that the new Captain of the Guard has scattered Chaol’s remaining loyal men away from the Great Hall during Dorian’s birthday celebration. Brullo gives Chaol maps of the party layout, and Ress says the captain likely wants to demean them rather than expose a real conspiracy.
Aelin unexpectedly appears at the stall, having tracked Chaol and Nesryn. She greets Ress and Brullo, and Brullo asks to see her face. After recognizing her resemblance to Aedion, Brullo understands who she is and that she intends to rescue Aedion. Chaol objects to Aelin involving his men, but Aelin says the decision is not his.
Rather than asking for help, Aelin warns Brullo to keep his men away from the southern wall of the gardens during the coming operation. She also tells him to have Chaol’s loyal guards wear red flowers in honor of Dorian’s birthday so they can be identified and spared. After Aelin leaves, Chaol realizes she is planning to turn the palace into a battlefield and has deliberately protected Brullo, Ress, and their men, though she still says nothing about saving Dorian.
After leaving the Shadow Market, Aelin knows she is being watched but goes to the Royal Bank of Adarlan anyway. Using a false name, she reviews her accounts with the Master of the Bank, studies his office and locked client files, and covertly pockets something from his desk before leaving with withdrawn funds. Moving through Rifthold, she notices public butchering blocks and bodies nailed to walls, and decides she cannot risk capturing a Valg until after Aedion is safe.
The next morning, Aelin wakes in her Rifthold apartment from a dreamlike expectation that Rowan is beside her. His absence hits her hard, but she refuses to let needing or missing him become a crutch. As she eats a cold breakfast, an urchin arrives with an urgent summons to the Assassins’ Keep.
