Chapter 83

Overview

In the aftermath of the castle’s destruction, Aelin sleeps for three days while Rowan, Aedion, Lysandra, and the others secure the shattered stronghold and confirm that Dorian and Chaol survived. Lorcan’s brief return exposes both his lingering honor-bound motives and his continuing threat, especially after he steals Dorian’s ring.

Aelin’s awakening shifts the chapter from recovery to emotional reckoning: she and Rowan share the truth of what happened, acknowledge their fear of losing each other, and finally act on their bond. The chapter closes with Aelin preparing to face Dorian, signaling that victory over the king has left urgent personal and political consequences.

Summary

Aelin remains unconscious for three days while Rowan stays at her bedside, recovering his injured leg and waiting for his power to return. Aedion takes control of the damaged castle and imprisons surviving guards, while Chaol and Dorian are found alive but unconscious. A healer removes glass shards that Aelin accidentally sealed into her own wounds, leaving her back tattoo damaged.

In the immediate aftermath of the battle, Lorcan appears near Aelin’s rooms, but Lysandra blocks him despite being weakened and covered in blood. Lysandra vomits black blood and gore on Lorcan, forcing Rowan to intervene. Rowan confronts Lorcan for lying about the Wyrdhounds and endangering Aelin and Aedion, and Lorcan admits he came because Aedion is Gavriel’s son before warning that the conflict is not over.

When Aelin finally wakes, Rowan is angry and relieved. Aelin immediately asks after Dorian and Chaol, and Rowan tells Aelin both men are alive. Aelin demands the truth of what happened while she slept, so Rowan recounts the aftermath, including Lorcan’s actions, the castle’s reorganization, and Lysandra intimidating courtiers in ghost leopard form. Aelin then tells Rowan what the king claimed before dying and what Dorian still chose to do.

After Aelin’s physical weakness becomes clear, Rowan helps Aelin move and then holds Aelin in her old bedchamber. The two speak honestly about fearing each other’s deaths and agree that future world-saving will be done together. Rowan confesses that after centuries of wandering, he feels he was searching for Aelin, and they kiss, making their romantic bond explicit.

Aedion enters Aelin’s suite to deliver news but sees Aelin and Rowan kissing; Rowan shuts the door in Aedion’s face with a gust of wind. In the hall, Lysandra watches with emotion and says she hopes to find that kind of love one day. The next day, Aelin realizes Lorcan stole Dorian’s golden ring after knocking her unconscious, but she takes comfort in the fact that Lorcan did not discover the Amulet of Orynth was fake. With Rowan guarding nearby, Aelin enters Dorian’s room and greets him as he looks out over the ruined gardens.
