Chapter 30

Overview

Dorian remains trapped inside his own body while the Valg prince uses him and reveals a secret chamber of crowns taken from conquered nations. The demon's ambition extends beyond Adarlan to other realms, raising the stakes of the Valg threat.

Dorian's despair deepens as the demon mocks his losses and his inability to fight back. His wish that Aelin had killed him underscores both his suffering and the urgency of freeing or stopping him.

Summary

Deep beneath the stone castle, the Valg prince possessing Dorian visits a hidden chamber that the trapped human consciousness recognizes as a place of darkness and trophies. Dorian can sometimes see through eyes that may once have been his, but the demon controls the body completely.

The chamber is arranged with pedestals, each holding a black pillow and a crown. The Valg prince explains that these are the crowns of conquered nations and promises that more will soon be added, perhaps even from other worlds.

Dorian tries to retreat inward, indifferent to the demon's ambitions and desperate to escape its voice. The Valg prince mocks him as weak and cruelly invokes the beheading of the woman Dorian loved.

After the demon's taunts, Dorian can only wish that the woman with familiar eyes had killed him when she had the chance. The chapter confirms that Dorian remains conscious inside the possession, suffering and resisting only by withdrawal.
