Chapter 88

Overview

Aelin’s final hours in Rifthold become a series of farewells, as Aelin entrusts Chaol with seeking southern allies and leaves Dorian to rule a liberated but wounded kingdom. Aelin departs for Terrasen with Rowan, Aedion, and Lysandra, turning toward home and the next war while Rifthold shows signs of freedom and renewal. In the aftermath, Dorian’s trauma surfaces, and Manon’s secret visit reveals a fragile, uncertain connection between two survivors shaped by Valg darkness.

Summary

On the night before leaving Rifthold, Aelin tries to visit Elena’s tomb one last time, but rubble from the castle’s destruction blocks the way. After searching with her hands and magic, Aelin gives up, relieved at least that the sewers, tunnels, and catacombs seem clear of Valg and that Rifthold is temporarily safe.

Aelin returns to her rooms and finds Dorian and Chaol waiting by the fire. Because Morath and Maeve remain threats, Aelin appoints Chaol an official ambassador for Terrasen and charges Chaol with securing an alliance from the Southern Continent while Chaol travels there for healing. Chaol returns the Eye of Elena to Aelin, and Aelin explains that Chaol’s courage made the amulet awaken and save him.

The next morning, Aelin prepares to leave with Rowan, Aedion, and Lysandra. Aelin has already said farewell to Chaol, showing Chaol her restored fire magic and leaving Chaol a harmless golden flame; Aelin also leaves Nesryn a gold arrow as a gift. Chaol gives Damaris to Aedion, insisting the ancient blade remain on the continent.

Aelin says goodbye to Dorian in the courtyard. Dorian, newly burdened by kingship and grief, admits he wishes he could speak to the woman he lost one last time, and Aelin assures Dorian that she knows what was in his heart. Aelin promises lasting friendship, then rides out with her court, holding Rowan’s hand as Rifthold’s freed streets, silent of slaves and whips, give way to music from the Royal Theater.

Later, Dorian wakes from another nightmare about the collar and the Valg possession, haunted by memories he has not shared. From his balcony, Dorian sees Manon Blackbeak on Abraxos perched on the glass wall. Dorian raises a hand to show Manon he is free, and Manon flies away into the night, uncertain why Manon came but aware that the world, the Thirteen, and Manon herself may be changing.
