Chapter 3
Overview
Amina prepares for the mission to find Dunya, choosing discretion over flamboyance and reclaiming her weapons. A fierce argument with her mother exposes the risks of confronting a Frank and the lure of Salima’s fortune. After Marjana’s ominous “bad feeling,” Amina still departs at dawn—deciding to consult a perilous contact before heading to Aden.
Summary
As sunset falls, Amina packs for a swift voyage to Aden, opting for plain clothes to preserve discretion while reclaiming her grandfather’s khanjar, her sword, and shield. Memories of freedom and her lineage reinforce her resolve even as she prepares to maintain a low profile in Aden.
Amina’s mother arrives, furious at the plan to pursue a Frank. Their argument lays bare the Franks’ notorious brutality and Amina’s family history of loss, but Amina counters with Salima’s immense offer: a million dinars, with large sums promised for departure and information. Financial strain and duty to Asif’s memory drive Amina, while her mother warns of the emotional cost and past trauma Amina carried home.
Pressured, Amina insists it is “one job,” promising to walk away if danger escalates. Her mother refuses her blessing, fearing for Marjana. The dispute exposes Amina’s longing for security for her family, her guilt over Asif, and hints at a concealed past that changed her after Marjana’s birth.
Amina then speaks to Marjana, framing the trip as a brief business journey. Marjana, frightened by boats after her father’s death, pleads for her not to go and confesses a “bad feeling.” The fear unsettles Amina, recalling a supernatural former lover, yet she reassures Marjana and resolves to proceed.
Before dawn, Amina performs her prayers, reflecting on faith, family, and the looming eclipse, then kisses her sleeping daughter goodbye. In the kitchen, her mother arms her with food and blessings despite misgivings. Amina leaves the house determined—choosing not to sail directly to Aden but first to seek counsel from the most dangerous person she knows.
