Chapter 34
Overview
Amina delivers Dunya’s farewell letter to Salima, who ends their alliance but vows not to target Amina’s family. The al-Hilli family djinn secretly provides books for Dunya’s studies. Amina then sails to a secluded beach and reunites, tearfully, with her mother and daughter, reclaiming home and peace.
Summary
In Salima al-Hilli’s stifling courtyard, Amina confirms that Dunya has chosen her own path, refusing to reveal the girl’s location despite Salima’s grief and veiled threats. Amina argues that Dunya’s nature should be honored, while Salima insists not all dreams should be pursued. Salima ends their relationship, promising to leave Amina’s family alone but declaring them enemies, and withholding further reward.
As Amina departs, a shrouded figure with glowing eyes—revealed as the al-Hilli family djinn—hands her a saddlebag of books, scrolls, and tools “for the little one,” insisting the family’s work continue before vanishing through a wall. Amina brings the bag to her waiting crew on the beach, explaining there is no bounty, only this unexpected gift.
Rejoining Dalila, Majed, and Tinbu, Amina confirms there will be no pursuit from authorities and postpones new jobs. She declares a single destination first in mind.
At dawn, the Marawati anchors off a secluded beach near Salalah. Amina wades ashore to find her mother and her daughter, Marjana, racing to meet her. Overcome, Amina embraces Marjana and her mother, accepting scolding with relief, and affirms that—for now—she is home.
