Chapter 19
Overview
Amina and her companions escape Socotra’s interior with survivors and part ways at a lagoon. Shaken by Falco’s assault and revelations, Amina decides to keep Raksh for his knowledge, straining trust with Dalila and enraging Majed. Back aboard the Marawati, Raksh guides them to set a course north after Dunya.
Summary
Through the night, Amina, Dalila, Tinbu, and Raksh flee with rescued villagers along hidden routes until dawn at a secluded lagoon. The village leader vows to seek protection from western pirate clans and hints at vengeance, then departs, asking if Amina will still pursue Dunya. Amina, exhausted and traumatized, resolves to reach the Marawati and escape Socotra.
Haunted by Falco’s attack and the near-binding stinger, Amina confronts her fear of leaving her daughter Marjana ignorant of her heritage. Raksh, temporarily helpful, explains the stinger would have let Falco track and influence Amina as part of a marid-possession scheme requiring living hosts. Realizing their disadvantage, Amina decides Raksh’s knowledge may be crucial to finding Dunya and countering Falco.
While building a signal fire, Dalila gently probes Amina’s silence and challenges the decision to bring Raksh. Amina admits their peril and her lack of answers against Falco’s magic. Their tense talk softens into mutual trust when Dalila shares a guarded hint of her past and asks Amina not to vanish from her life again, reaffirming their friendship.
The Marawati arrives. Majed refuses to allow Raksh aboard, but Amina insists they postpone the fight and focus on leaving the island. On deck, Raksh’s allure briefly unsettles the crew until Amina checks him. Tinbu asks for a heading, and Majed prepares to navigate using currents and tides from the northern shore departure point.
Rejecting conventional navigation, Raksh asks Amina to focus on Dunya and, through that link, divines a northerly direction. Facing the unnatural powers Falco commands, Amina sides with Raksh’s guidance over tradition. The crew sets a course north in urgent pursuit of Dunya.
