Chapter 23

Overview

Cast into the sea, Amina survives days adrift and lands on a surreal, dangerous island teeming with impossible creatures. After narrowly escaping predators, she finds a magical round boat crewed by otherworldly beings who flee. The chapter ends with Raksh suddenly appearing, promising answers and new conflict.

Summary

Thrown overboard in a storm, Amina survives by clinging to wreckage. A shark circles, but Amina drives it off and binds a shoulder gash. With no ships or land in sight, she chooses a northwest course, paddling a lashed plank, praying, and rationing meager water.

Days pass under blistering sun. To survive, Amina drinks condensation, kills a turtle for blood and meat, and catches a few fish. Strange, color-shifted birds eventually appear, all flying east, and Amina follows them. At last she sights land and, urged on by thoughts of her daughter, reaches a beach before collapsing.

Reviving at night under a silver sun, Amina drinks restorative water from a mossy, flowering tree. Her vision clarifies, revealing the island’s bizarre life: marching blue sea stars battling a flying lizard and a purple, finned cowlike beast. A pink, jelly-like predator erupts from the surf, devours the beast, and mimics its moo, forcing Amina to flee inland.

In a dense jungle, Amina discovers a colossal tree bearing countless small, humanoid tree-born creatures. One falls safely, only to be seized by an enormous crimson bird, confirming the island’s brutal food chain. Amina runs toward another beach.

There she finds a round, reed-woven boat anchored by a golden filament, cushioned with silks and piloted by two dazzling, inhuman sailors flirting with a mermaiden. When Amina begs for help, they reveal golden, pointed features and a fish tail—and, spooked by something behind Amina, they vanish with their wind-borne craft.

As Amina splashes after them, a familiar voice calls her name. The chapter closes with Raksh revealing his presence on the uncanny shore, setting up a confrontation.
