Chapter 30

Overview

Amina and Magnun stage a diversion to recapture the Marawati and free Amina’s crew. Amid the assault, Amina discovers Falco’s men are bound by visible oath-bonds she alone can see and severs them with her meteor blade; Dalila kills Yazid. Amina then frees Falco’s marid by cutting its many leashes, briefly linking minds with it. As the eclipse starts and Falco flees deeper with Dunya, Amina enters the opened Door alone and emerges into a haunting replay of her past with Asif.

Summary

Amina, Raksh, and a strike team scale the cliffs above Falco’s camp while Magnun leads a stealth attack by sea to feign stealing the Marawati. They spot some of Amina’s bound crew and Falco’s ailing marid on the shore. When Magnun signals, panic erupts in the camp as the marid lumbers seaward to engage his ship.

Storming the beach, Amina witnesses a slain scout’s spectral seaweed cord tied to a chest stinger—an oath-bond only she can see. In battle she tests her meteor blade on a hulking, transformed foe, slicing his tether and instantly stripping his magic; he attacks anyway, and she kills him.

Yazid ambushes Amina with her stolen scimitar and overwhelms her. Tinbu distracts him and Dalila arrives, shattering the vials in her ribbon cap across Yazid’s face, blinding him. Dalila then executes him with Amina’s sword. Reunited with Majed and others, they learn Falco fled into the cave with Dunya.

The marid, bound by dozens of luminous leashes to Falco within the cave, advances. Amina orders her crew toward the tunnel, drags Raksh to distract the beast, and uses the meteor blade to cut many chains. To sever those near its head, she climbs a spectral bond onto the marid, finishes the last links, and all bonds disintegrate.

The freed marid’s memories flood Amina’s mind as an involuntary, uncuttable ribbon briefly ties them. It heals and bolts to sea, flinging Amina into the water; Majed rescues her. With the eclipse beginning, Amina refuses to wait. She races alone into the cave’s open bronze Door.

Crossing the threshold flips reality. Amina finds herself on a burning ship during a moon-slashed night she recognizes: the night she burned Asif. He stands chained to the mast, begging for help, as the chapter ends.
