Chapter 8
Overview
Recovering at sea after escaping Aden, Amina learns Falco has been actively seeking her through the recruiter Layth. The crew briefly suspects insider betrayal, but news of Majed’s respectable new life eases that fear. Amina decides to pursue Layth in Zabid, shifting the hunt from rumor to a concrete lead.
Summary
The Marawati rows through the night and catches wind before dawn. Amina checks on Tinbu, who is being treated by Dalila for lash wounds after the Aden prison break. Amid banter, Tinbu admits a failed bribe driven by flirtation, and Amina confirms he is otherwise well after visiting his family.
Talk turns to Falco. Tinbu reveals Falco’s agent, Layth—an old Hormuz acquaintance now recruiting crews—approached him seeking Amina specifically, praising her exploits and claiming she is “blessed.” Amina bristles at the rumor and demands details, learning Layth told Falco no one had seen her for years.
Dalila worries Falco’s knowledge is too precise for gossip, prompting Amina to suspect an insider who once knew their crew, possibly Majed. Tinbu defends Majed, sharing recent letters: Majed has married in Mogadishu, works for the muhtasib, cares for orphans, and refused Amina’s set-aside shares as “devil’s money.” The news tempers fears that Majed betrayed them.
Shifting strategy, Tinbu provides a lead: Layth plans to spend his earnings in Zabid after placing a captain for Falco. Seeing a tangible trail, Amina decides they will resupply and head to Zabid to find Layth and trace Falco’s network.
The scene ends with comic relief as Tinbu dotes on his bedraggled cat, Payasam, calling her a lucky charm—an ironic counterpoint to their narrow escape and looming pursuit.
