Summary
Amina travels to a nondescript shop between Salalah and Aden to visit Dalila, a former crewmate and Banu Sasan poisoner. After a tense, sardonic reunion in Dalila’s hidden apothecary, Amina navigates barbed jokes about past abandonments and confirms Marjana is well.
Surveying Dalila’s lethal workshop, Amina learns Dalila has advanced her knockout gases. Their banter turns to Amina’s purpose: Sayyida Salima’s claim that a Frank in Aden abducted Dunya. Dalila produces a letter from a Frank who previously solicited her expertise, boasting of “humors” and the Unseen, and naming an Aden agent, Layth.
Amina shares Salima’s offer—100,000 dinars to locate Dunya, one million to recover her—and the 10,000-dinar deposit. The absence of a ransom troubles both women, but the Falco link through Layth and the family’s talismans provide motive.
Dalila needles Amina about coincidence and risk, yet the money and mystery persuade her. She agrees to come to Aden and pack her experiments. Amina admits promising her mother and daughter to be cautious and asks Dalila’s help to keep that promise.
As they prepare to depart, Amina notices Dalila’s worsening eyesight; Dalila deflects by pointing out Amina’s limp. Their decision stands: they will sail to Aden together, better equipped but facing a dangerous adversary who already knows their names.
