Summary
Dunya, newly reborn as Jamal, dresses as a young scholar to blend in aboard the Marawati. Jamal savors the freedom of a new beginning while the ship remains anchored near Amina’s family home, where relatives tour the vessel.
On deck, Marjana watches dolphins as the cat Payasam plays with her belt. Amina confers loudly with her crew over a map. She notices Jamal and asks about the placement of the gifted manuscripts, a reminder of the al-Hilli djinn’s intervention.
As Amina serves stew, Marjana asks about a dramatic scar. Tinbu insists it was from a princely foe; Amina dismisses this, and Dalila recalls the peril of nearly selling paste-gem “crowns,” underscoring the crew’s reckless past and hard-won caution.
Jamal proposes to record Amina’s stories. Amina bristles at being turned into a romanticized hero, then pointedly asks that the tale be told in her exact words—even the rude ones. Jamal agrees.
Encouraged by Marjana, Amina begins a new tale, warning her daughter not to repeat it to her grandmother and urging her to eat. The moment sets a fresh course: Amina’s lived legend will be preserved by Jamal, though the telling itself is deferred to another night.
