Chapter 6

Overview

On Valentine's Day, Milo privately resolves to stay in Spokane after discharge to pursue Sara, while seething over Dr. Vernon's delusions about a date with her. Sara sneaks cheesesteaks into Milo's room, bribing Connie for secrecy, and the two share their first real date. Milo reveals his friend Maisy was kidnapped by her ex, deepening their intimacy, and the night culminates in a passionate first kiss, cementing their relationship despite the risk to Sara's job.

Summary

From Milo's POV, he speaks with his mother on the phone, reassuring her about his recovery from the propane explosion and his skin grafts. He keeps the guilt over the accident to himself and decides not to tell her he plans to remain in Spokane after discharge to pursue Sara, even considering relocating or helping Sara get a job at Jamison Valley Hospital. He stews over Dr. Vernon's smug mention of a Valentine's sushi date with Sara, knowing Vernon is delusional about her interest. Milo counts down the hours to his real Valentine's date with Sara.

The POV shifts to Sara, who sneaks into Milo's room with bags of cheesesteaks and fries from Bruchi's. She has bribed Connie with her own meal to keep the date secret; Connie agrees Vernon overstepped by reporting Sara and promises to pretend Milo fell asleep early. Sara reveals that over the past week she avoided Milo's room physically but spent every night talking with him on the phone, learning about his Montana farm upbringing.

They eat together on his bed by tea light, sharing stories of bad past Valentine's dates. Milo tells Sara that one of his best friends, Maisy, a nurse, was recently kidnapped and nearly killed by her ex, a doctor named Everett, who didn't want their baby. He admits he feels guilty for not being there to help. Sara suggests he call Maisy, comparing his comforting phone presence to her own experience.

For the next part of the date, Milo insists Sara sit beside him on the bed rather than in her chair to watch a romantic comedy. Pressed shoulder to shoulder, Sara is overwhelmed with desire during a sex scene. Milo confesses it's killing him not to kiss her, acknowledging the risk to her job, and they kiss passionately. He praises her hair and her, then pulls back to slow down. Milo promises to kiss her again once he's out of the hospital bed, and Sara concludes that being fired wouldn't be so bad.
