At nearly two in the morning, Sara is jolted awake by a frantic call from her mother, Abby. Fearing Denny has overdosed, Sara races with Milo to her childhood home, only to discover Denny has driven his truck directly into the house while high and drunk. Police have already arrested him, and the home—including Sara's old bedroom and the living room she shared with her late father—is collapsing and unsalvageable in its original form.

Sara confronts Denny in the back of the police car and tells the officers she's glad he's going to jail. She argues with Abby, urging her not to bail Denny out, but Abby defends him. When Sara invites her mother to stay at the condo, Abby hesitates—then Dr. Vernon arrives, revealing he and Abby have been dating. Sara is stunned to find her mother in the arms of the man who assaulted her. Milo drives her home, urging her to tell Abby the truth.

The next day, Sara tells Abby about Vernon, but Abby dismisses her as dramatic and refuses to believe her. Overwhelmed—jobless, betrayed by her mother, and grieving her childhood home—Sara despairs. Milo reveals he must return to Montana within a week and asks her to come with him to Prescott. He has already arranged a job interview at the local hospital. After thinking of what her father would say, Sara agrees.

Sara and Milo spend the week packing her condo, donating items, and arranging for the property to be rented rather than sold. After a final night in a downtown hotel, they hit the road. Sara leaves without saying goodbye to Abby or Denny, choosing a fresh start. As they drive into a wide Montana valley, Milo tells her they've arrived in Prescott—their new home.
