Chapter 9

Overview

Milo is discharged and goes straight to Sara's home, where he finally draws out her confession about Dr. Vernon's forced kiss. He convinces her to report the assault to HR, though the response is discouragingly defensive. Back at her condo, they make love for the first time by the light of Luna's tea candle, cementing their bond and Sara's emotional release from the trauma.

Summary

Milo is discharged from the burn unit, having endured a week of short, evasive phone calls with Sara since she fled his bed. Determined to find out what's wrong, he packs his belongings, including the battery-powered tea light Luna gave him, and leaves the hospital wearing real clothes for the first time in months.

Milo arrives at Sara's condo a day early, surprising her in her pajamas. He kisses her passionately, which breaks through her week-long emotional numbness, and she sobs in his arms. After she calms, Sara confesses that Dr. Vernon cornered and kissed her in the locker room, admitting she froze and feels violated, embarrassed, and as though she cheated on Milo. Milo, though furious, remains gentle, assures her none of it is her fault, and tells her she has nothing to apologize for.

Milo urges Sara to report Vernon. Worried about future victims, including potentially someone like Maisy, Sara agrees. They drive to the hospital, where HR's initially sympathetic tone turns subtly accusatory, and Sara is told an investigation will take three to seven business days. Milo is convinced nothing will come of it.

Back at Sara's condo, the planned date dissolves into a quiet evening at home. They kiss in the kitchen, and Sara finds Vernon's kiss finally erased by Milo's. They move to her bedroom, where Milo insists on no lights but produces the tea light from Luna. They make love for the first time, tender and unhurried. Afterward, Milo cleans her up, they discuss their long abstinences, and Milo tells her the explosion and pain were worth it to be with her. Sara wishes her late father could have met him, and Milo promises her bed will never feel lonely again.
