Chapter 7
Overview
Summary
While Sara works her shift, Kym informs her she has a visitor. Sara panics, fearing it's HR director Amber coming to fire her over the Valentine's incident. Instead, it's her mother Abby, whose car broke down nearby. Abby demands Sara's condo keys to wait there, but Sara refuses, knowing her mother would smoke inside and criticize everything. Abby reveals she has already texted Sara's brother Denny to come pick her up.
Dr. Vernon appears and is immediately drawn to Abby's flirtatious manner. Sara watches in disgust as her mother flirts with the man who has been making her uncomfortable for months, and Vernon openly ogles Abby. Milo emerges from his room with his walker, having eavesdropped on the entire exchange. Unlike other men, Milo barely glances at Abby, keeping his eyes on Sara, reaffirming their connection.
Abby and Vernon decide to get coffee downstairs while waiting for Denny. Before leaving, Abby criticizes Sara's hair and scrubs. When the elevator opens, Denny arrives visibly high—glassy-eyed, dirty, and unsteady. Sara is heartbroken seeing her brother's deterioration and knows their late father would have intervened. Mother and son leave together, and Vernon makes another inappropriate comment to Sara before she escapes to the locker room.
Sara composes herself and goes to Milo's room. Milo confesses a difficult truth: he initially blamed Vernon for taking him off morphine out of jealousy, but now realizes Vernon recognized that Milo was becoming too dependent on the drug. Milo acknowledges Vernon is a decent doctor despite being a creep. He urges Sara to help Denny and reassures her that, contrary to her self-description as plain and dull next to her mother, she shines.
