Chapter 8

Overview

The intervention with Denny implodes when Abby refuses to back Sara, leaving Denny enraged and Sara estranged from both. Seeking comfort, Sara visits Milo and accidentally sleeps in his bed, earning a formal warning rather than termination. The chapter ends with a devastating violation: Dr. Vernon corners Sara in the locker room and forcibly kisses her, then blames her, leaving her traumatized and unable to confide in Milo.

Summary

Sara takes a happy phone call from former patient Luna, who has readjusted well to school. She also chats with Milo, who has become her best friend, before heading to her mother Abby's house for the planned intervention with Denny.

The intervention collapses immediately. Denny hurls a salad bowl, screams that Sara doesn't know him and that he's the disappointing son, and demands their mother confirm whether she thinks he has a problem. Abby stays silent, letting Sara take the fall. Denny tells Sara "fuck you" and storms out. Sara accuses Abby of cowardice and of funding Denny's drugs; Abby blames their late father for never wanting Denny, which Sara fiercely denies before leaving.

Shaken, Sara drives to the hospital and goes to Milo's room without her badge. He comforts her, lightens her mood by teasing her about wearing jeans, and they cuddle in his bed watching TV. They accidentally fall asleep together until night nurse Michelle wakes them at 3 a.m. Mortified, Sara flees, ignoring Milo's calls, certain she will be fired.

The next morning, charge nurse Amber meets Sara and, instead of firing her, places a formal warning in her file and orders her to take a week of vacation until Milo is discharged. Sara accepts, deciding Milo is worth the black mark.

As she leaves the locker room, Dr. Vernon ambushes her, traps her against the lockers, and forcibly kisses her. He then accuses her of betraying what they "could have been" and says he cannot forgive her, leaving her frozen and ashamed. Sara races home, showers compulsively, and cries herself to sleep, unable to tell Milo what happened because he would retaliate.
