Chapter Thirty-Seven

Overview

Tiyung endures isolation in Idle Prison, clinging to Hana’s small mercies and the hope of seeing Sora again. When Hana fails to appear, his dread spikes, only for guards to throw a new prisoner into his cell. The surprise cellmate raises immediate danger and uncertainty about Tiyung’s fate.

Summary

Tiyung narrates his confinement in Idle Prison, noting small comforts Hana has provided: a lantern with oil, extra food, and a notepad. Hana explained the guards’ random schedules to disorient prisoners and hinted at a secret entrance she uses. Tiyung exercises to maintain his mind and body while tracking time by Hana’s visits.

When Hana does not arrive at the expected time, Tiyung receives meals from guards without explanation. Hours pass with no sign of her. He tries to accept that her visits may have ended and battles rising fear that his execution may be imminent.

Exhausted, Tiyung prays to see Sora again and to spare her if only one can be saved. He falls asleep, only to be jolted awake as the door opens in torchlight. Preparing to face death with dignity, he steadies himself.

Instead of being taken, Tiyung watches as guards throw another man into the cell. The new prisoner collapses on the floor, and as Tiyung’s eyes adjust, he realizes he has a cellmate. Tiyung immediately suspects the man may be there to kill him, leaving his fate more uncertain than before.
