Chapter Twenty-Four
Overview
On Lake Cerome, Aeri identifies Mikail’s key as veritite and uses it to reveal a hidden door in the ice. Royo alone can turn the lock, opening a stairway to an underwater Temple of Knowledge. The group descends, marvels at the impossible dome, and approaches ancient doors, sensing a looming trap.
Summary
On the frozen surface of Lake Cerome, Mikail, Aeri, Euyn, Sora, and Royo search the spot where a gray-robed priest vanished. Finding no break in the ice, they suspect a concealed entrance. Aeri asks for Mikail’s “jade” key and identifies it as veritite, a stone that reveals its own kind.
Aeri strikes the key against the ice, exposing the glass-edged outline of a hidden door and a green veritite keyhole. She and Mikail both fail to turn the key, but Royo tries and the lock yields, opening a vertical hatch and a stairwell descending into darkness.
The group files down: Mikail first with Euyn covering, then Aeri and Sora, and Royo last, who shuts the door behind them. The white marble stairs glow faintly, leading to a vast underwater dome that shelters a courtyard and a blazing white temple. The impossible construction fills them with awe even as Mikail remains suspicious of how easily they entered.
They advance carefully toward towering black-wood doors carved with the tree of knowledge. As Mikail opens them, an immediate sense that something is wrong grips him, setting the tone of danger for whatever lies within.
