Chapter Fifty-Five
Overview
Royo and Aeri make camp in the Northern Pass, hiding the black egg beneath snow to avoid predators and amarth attention. The pair, reeling from survival and loss, break into laughter and tears, then into a consensual, impulsive intimacy. Their bond deepens amid uncertainty, setting emotional stakes for what follows.
Summary
Royo and Aeri push through the Northern Pass until exhaustion forces them to camp. While Royo builds a fire and sets camp, Aeri digs into the snow, explaining she is burying the black egg to keep it safe from predators and hidden from amarth flying overhead. She conceals it deep and smooths the snow.
With camp secured, pent-up emotions surface. Aeri starts laughing and crying at once, and Royo, equally overwhelmed by relief and fear after their narrow escape, joins her. He reflects that he tried to save Aeri but her owl saved them both, underlining his shaken sense of control and gratitude.
The release leads to closeness. Aeri kisses Royo suddenly; Royo reciprocates but hesitates, aware that shock and adrenaline are fueling the moment. Aeri urges him not to overthink. He warns he does not want to hurt her; she answers, meeting his gaze, and insists on her choice.
When Royo asks directly if Aeri wants him, she replies, “For tonight… and tomorrow,” signaling desire anchored in the present rather than promises. Royo gives in despite misgivings, laying out a blanket by the fire, and they choose each other, their intimacy forged from relief, danger, and unresolved feelings.
